Summary
How does WUR support student carers?
null
Are you a student and are you providing care for someone close to you, such as a parent, sibling, partner, friend or housemate? You’re not alone. Many students act as student carers, even if they don’t identify themselves that way.
On this page, you’ll find the types of support Wageningen University (WUR) offers and where you can go if you feel overwhelmed or simply have questions.
What is a Student Carer?
Student carers provide help to someone who cannot manage independently, either temporarily or long term. This may involve intensive care, for example for a family member who is ill, but it can also mean lighter, day-to-day support for a housemate or friend.
As a young carer, you often juggle multiple responsibilities: caring, studying, working, sports, social life… You do it out of love, but it can become a lot to handle. It is important to know that you don’t have to manage everything on your own.
Where can you find support at WUR?
Your Study Adviser can help you explore what is possible within your degree programme. Together, you can look at adjustments, planning, or study options that suit your situation. Make an appointment to discuss your needs.
The Student Dean provides a confidential space where you can share your story. They can help you to gain clarity, inform you about relevant arrangements and support you when caring responsibilities affect your studies. If you have any questions or feel that things are becoming too much, please book an appointment.
For an overview of all available services, visit the Student Guidance page. See also the webpage mantelzorg.nl - in Dutch- for young caregivers.
Financial Support for Student Carers
If you experience a study delay due to your caring responsibilities, you may be eligible for the Financial Support for Students (FOS) scheme. The student dean will review your application with you to determine whether you qualify and what conditions apply.
