Are you a top-level athlete who would like to study in Wageningen? Wageningen University is happy to work with you to find a way to balance your studies with top-level sports.
Combining intensive training schedules, competitions and (international) travel with an academic programme requires good planning and clear communication. On this page, you’ll find more information about the available arrangements, facilities and support for elite athletes at WUR.
Top athlete status
To access additional facilities and personalised arrangements, you will need to hold an elite athlete status. You can obtain this by contacting WUR’s elite sports coordinator, Henri ten Klooster, at SC De Bongerd. He will assess whether you meet the criteria, such as the NOC*NSF definition of elite sport, and advise the student dean regarding your application.
Note: In some cases, support may also be available without an official NOC*NSF elite status.
How does WUR support elite athletes?
Students with elite athlete status can benefit from a range of academic and examination facilities, including:
-
Rescheduling of exams
-
Postponement of deadlines
-
Greater flexibility regarding mandatory attendance
-
Opportunity to catch up on course components
-
Alternative or substitute assignments
Under certain conditions, financial compensation is also available in case of study delay. This can be granted for up to four months per academic year, or a total of up to twelve months. To apply for this support, please contact the student deans. They can also help you find solutions if your sports commitments are affecting your academic progress.
We recommend contacting your study adviser early on. Together, you can discuss possible adjustments to your programme, such as changes to your schedule, extensions to your deadlines or arrangements for your exams.
Sports Centre De Bongerd
Students with elite athlete status may also benefit from strength training and professional guidance at Sports Centre De Bongerd, the university’s sports facility. Please contact Tijmen van Oostenbrugge for more information.
